It’s estimated that more than 1 million types of mould exist! Yikes, that's a lot and yet less than 10 percent have actually been named. This means mould is very common in both indoor and outdoor environments. While mould and humans can sometimes co-exist without issue, there are certain species of mould that can cause health effects for some people.
If the right conditions exist, mould will grow!!
These conditions include:
Water - Different mould types require varying amounts of liquid before growth begins.
Temperature - Normal indoor temperatures will promote mould growth.
Time - Initial mould colonizers can take hold within one day after being exposed to an adequate water supply.
What to Do:
Stay out of affected areas.
Turn off the HVAC system and fans.
Mould growth can occur in any home, so it’s important to keep an eye out for situations that might promote mould activity. Roof/chimney leaks, wet basements, or condensation from ducts that dampen surrounding insulation are just a few examples of issues that make a house a prime target for mould growth.
If you suspect mould in your home, call SERVPRO of Milton & North Oakville to assess the situation. We have the knowledge, tools and track record to effectively remediate mould in your home or business.

Some quick tips while remodeling your space!

Thinking about doing some home renovations? Dust control is often overlooked. Not only will it get on and embed itself in any uncovered furniture, it will also spread throughout the house, get in your clothing, hair, lungs, eyes, nostrils, and just about every other point of entry.
Cover the furniture with drop sheets, or even inexpensive plastic sheeting. Also consider containing the area using 4-6 mm poly sheeting. When we do jobs, we will also consider putting the area under negative air pressure to minimize the potential for dust and other contaminants spreading. If the area is small enough, you can do this yourself using an ordinary cylinder vacuum cleaner (like a Shop-Vac), by placing the canister outside the contained area and placing the end of the hose inside the contained area.
Of course don't forget dust masks and eye protection.
If you need any help, dont hesitate to call us 905-864-9544.
Some tips on your commercial reconstruc!

Some of the most preventable injuries in our field are slips and falls. We work in wet environments, wet carpets, with soggy belongings all over the place. Even worse, when tearing out wet carpet, it is all too easy to cut a finger on a rusty carpet tack strip.
All of our employees are urged to keep their vaccinations up-to-date, including tetanus and HEP-A/B. In addition proper PPE is a requirement. We will turn down jobs in which we're asked to cut corners and put employees' and occupants' safety at risk.
From the SERVPRO® Newsline:
To help prevent injury from an exposed tack strip, remove tack strips completely when possible. Cover tack strips at the end of the day as well as at the end of the job. At a minimum, cover tack strips in doorways and other walkways.

Commercial Jobs

In the restoration industry we are often faced with a lot of different challenges, from residential fires to commercial floods. On a gloomy afternoon, a call came in. It was a furniture warehouse that had been flooded. The owner was frantic, confused and generally concerned about the safety of this business. While on the phone we assured him that we have dealt with these kinds of emergencies many times before and that he is in good hands with SERVPRO. After the call we loaded the truck with a few fans, and we were off. Upon arrival we noticed that the water had saturated the carpeted floor and rugs. Doing a quick walk through we realized the water had migrated far past the showroom into the back room and even the office area. The water damage was extensive to say the least, and the customer was unsure what to do next. After talking to him briefly, he told us one of the toilets had overflowed throughout the night. So, when he came in the next morning it had completely flooded. The scope was extensive, first we would have to remove all contents on the showroom floor. We would then have to extract the water from all affected areas. Then strategically set up 20 plus fans to start drying the carpet and rugs. Also, we would need to set up dehumidifiers to help remove the moisture from the air. Unfortunately a lot of the wooden and melamine furniture had adsorb a lot of moisture as well so we would need to try and catalog what was damaged and what could be repaired. In short these kinds of incidents happen all of the time, and can cost a business or home owner a pretty penny. To prevent these kinds of incidents and others, regular preventative maintenance is ideal. Call your local SERVPRO to create an E.R.P (emergency ready plan), you’ll be glad you did.
Commercial Restoration

In June of 2019, a call came in for a commercial mould remediation. The customer had recently acquired a commercial property that badly needed a face lift. Upon arrival we noticed a strong smell emitting from the building. Later on, after taking a brief tour we stumbled upon where the smell was coming from. The section where the offices were located was poorly ventilated. There was an excessive amount of moisture trapped within the office. The windows were not able to be opened, and the building's HVAC system was not working. To counteract the issue dehumidifiers had to be placed in the office. A thorough cleaning of the walls needed to be done. Containment and an air scrubber were used to remove the mold particles from the air and vents. Going forward we gave the owner a few suggestions that will help minimize the amount of moisture accumulation.
